At 6:05 p.m. on August 1, 2007, with rush hour traffic moving slowly, the central span of the 35W bridge suddenly gave way. The structure and deck collapsed into the river and onto the riverbanks below. Approximately 100 vehicles were involved. The thirteen victims of the collapse, aged 22 months to 60 years, were all Minnesota residents.
I was on that bridge at 3:30 p.m. stopped in traffic.
I find that most of my watershed moments are not necessarily good. Even though these moments are considered bad, sometimes even horrifying, I find they make me grow as a person more than the good times do.
Symbology used: background is stenciled with the new bridge’s sculptural design, 13 fabric beads with each victim’s story, 145 freshwater pearls representing each of the injured, and last the Phoenix card for hope, hope that the bridges of tomorrow will be safe and sound.
